CaliCrash is a free, public database of California traffic crash and incident data sourced directly from official state systems. Our goal is to make government crash data fast, searchable, and accessible to anyone — drivers, journalists, researchers, and the public.
CaliCrash aggregates data from two official California government sources:
Real-time traffic incidents are ingested from CA 511 via the Open511 API, the official California statewide traffic information system operated by Caltrans and regional transportation agencies. This feed covers active incidents — accidents, road closures, construction zones, and hazards — reported by CHP officers, Caltrans crews, and automated sensors across the state. The live feed is synchronized every 15 minutes.
Historical crash records are sourced from the California Crash Records System (CCRS), maintained by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). CCRS is the official statewide repository for traffic collision reports filed by law enforcement. Records in this system represent completed crash investigations and include details on location, severity, parties involved, and contributing factors. This dataset is updated daily.
Incident records are deduplicated using a combination of source identifiers and timestamps to avoid double-counting. Each record passes through a status lifecycle:
CaliCrash does not alter, supplement, or editorialize individual crash records. All data is displayed as received from the source systems.
CaliCrash covers traffic incidents and crash records statewide across California, including all counties, interstates, state routes, and local roads. Incidents are searchable by county, highway, incident type, severity, and date.
This data is provided for informational purposes — situational awareness, research, journalism, and public safety. CaliCrash is not a substitute for real-time emergency information from official sources. For active emergencies, call 911 or consult 511.org directly.
